Which voltage setting you should use is quite a controversial question. Most people will say that 115 volt is the safer option, while others don’t have a specific answer. In reality, it is upon your specific region and its authoritative bodies to decide which voltage setting to let you use. 

For instance, if you use your device in the United States, the power supply voltage to your computer should be 120v. On the other hand, in the case of any European or Asian country, you should use the 230v settings.

The main distinguishing factor between 115V and 230V equipment is the amount of current they draw against a particular power consumption value. For example, a 115V unit will pull twice the current drawn by a 230V unit while the power consumed remains constant.

115 or 230 Volts Power Supply 

A power supply unit is a switching mode that converts the high voltage AC into low voltage DC. Generally, AC voltage is widely used for its transportation conveniences. Yet, if the current does not convert into low voltage DC, the AC would burn the internal circuits of the computer.

The power supply has no other option but to use whatever the power source is providing. So, when the outlet transfers 220v of power even though the power supply unit is set to 115v, the additional current flux will damage the computer’s internal components. Therefore, changing the power supply to a higher value would cause your system not to boot at all. 

On the contrary, the opposite is true. If the incoming power is 115V, but the power supply is set to 220v, the system may refuse to start. In this case, the power supply expects more potency to run the system.

What Should I Do if the Voltage Switch Is Incorrectly Set

I will describe the process thoroughly. First, shut down the power supply and switch off the power button on the back of the power supply. After unplugging the power cable completely, wait for a minute or two. Before reattaching the power cable and turning the power supply on, toggle the voltage switch to its correct place.  

Can I use 115v in a 230v outlet? 

You cannot use a 115v power supply in a 230v outlet. Because when the 230v flows through the 115v power supply, it will be much more than the required power supply. This overflowed electricity can burn the internal circuits of the computer.

Final Words

The amount of voltage delivered from a power socket depends mainly on its geographical location. In other words, you don’t have complete control over what voltage setting to use for the power supply. Therefore, you will have to alter the settings between 115 and 230 volts depending on the region.
