Which One Is Better for 144 Hz Monitor: DVI or Display Port

February 9, 2022 by Jim Eddy

Ports and cables are very important in producing quality images from the monitors. Apart from the most popular video-generating connector HDMI, there are several others such as DVI (Display Visual Interface) and Display Port or in short DP. The choice of one of these ports largely depends on the specification of your monitor. As you may understand, a monitor running at a 144 Hz refresh rate must have a different demand on the port compared to a monitor running at a 60 Hz refresh rate.

Which One Is Better for 144 Hz Monitor: DVI or Display Port – Make the Right Choice

The display port is mainly for PC and you would hardly notice any DP on a TV. The display port can transfer both the audio and video signal which makes it suitable for video streaming or gaming. The newer display ports (DP) are particularly designed for producing high-resolution pictures. You can easily run a 4K monitor through the DP without any kind of stuttering or signal disturbance. However, as far as the refresh rate is concerned, DP works well on the balanced monitors. For a monitor with 2K or 4K resolution with 60 Hz refresh rate or at best 120 Hz refresh rate, DP works well. But there is hardly a newer generation of display port is available on the market that is capable of collaborating with the 144 Hz monitor.

The older DVI could only transmit video through the cable; the newer ones, like HDMI, produce both the sound and the video signal. DVI (Digital Visual Interface) is a versatile connector and with the use of a converter, you can easily convert a DVI interface to HDMI or DP interface. The most important usability of DVI is competitive gaming like shooting games or racing games where you would need that extra frame appearing faster than the others. These games run smoothly on a 144 Hz monitor. But if you do not have the powerful hardware, you may overkill the system with that kind of refresh rate. One lacking DVI has that it cannot be used for 4K or above displays with smoothness.

Conclusion

All in all, for a 144 Hz 1080p monitor, DVI would be better than a display port. You can buy a DVI port 1.3 or above to run your 144 Hz monitor. Competitive gamers love this kind of combination. Lastly, never forget to go with a good graphics card.
