[9 Fixes] Computer Screen Goes Black But the Computer Still Running

Last Updated on March 25, 2023 by Jim Eddy Leave a Comment

System overheating is the most encountered reason behind a computer screen going black while still on. Besides, monitor defects, hardware, and malware issues are also some of the main reasons for such a problem.

Proper ventilation and cleaning of the setup may solve the overheating issue. Moreover, some tweaking and reseating of the hardware and PC components respectively may resolve the problem.

Reasons and Solutions for the Computer Screen Goes Black But the Computer Still Running Error

Display going black while the power is still on, such an issue is very common among PC owners. Before we dive into how to solve such an issue, we must put light on why this happens.

1. Overheating

The most common reason behind a sudden black screen while the computer is still running is the computer crashing owing to overheating. A poorly designed computer is the main reason for overheating. Playing a CPU-intensive game for a long time can lead to overheating as well.

Fix: You should clean the dust from your PC more often and ensure proper ventilation to avoid overheating issues. Using a dust filter and employing multiple external fans will mostly help resolve the issue.

2. Hardware Issues

In case there is no overheating issue in your computer, you should take a look at the hardware-related failures. The issue could very well be of the power supply or hardware components.

Fix: You will need a technician to diagnose the hardware failure.

Besides, there could be an issue with the drivers related to the hardware as well. If you have updated or downloaded a driver for a component, the updated driver could very well be a problem in form of a bug.

Fix: Update or install properly.

3. Malware

Computer screens going off due to malware is very unlikely. This is because the malware does not operate at the same level as hardware software to cause an instant crash. However, it is still an issue to properly address.

Fix: Install an anti-virus to protect your computer from malware.

4. Monitor Failure

This is a common problem everyone faces from time to time. The issue could be the power cable not getting power or the HDMI cable not working properly. Furthermore, the issue could be with the old video drivers as well.

Fix: Check Your Monitor

Before you start wasting your time troubleshooting with the rest of your computer, test your monitor first. Reconnect the power plug and HDMI cable. If the display is showing any kind of diagnostic information, then you should know that the display is working okay.

5. Verify the Restart of Your PC

Your PC may be having trouble getting started from sleep or hibernate mode. In that case, you may observe the situation for a while and then force shut down. Later, restart the PC to check if everything is good.

6. Clear the CMOS

There might be an issue with the BIOS settings for the motherboard. A misconfiguration could also be the reason why the display is not working.

Fix: Clear the BIOS memory on the memory to reset the settings to factory levels and check if that helps.

7. Reseat the Components Inside the PC

Reseating the components inside the PC such as RAM, GPU, SSD, cooler, etc. can often work as “magic” in such cases.

Fix: Clean the components and their sitting places before you start the reseating process. However, reseat the CPU only if you suspect that it might have come loose.

8. Remove Each Hardware One At a Time

Remove as much hardware as possible without affecting the computer’s ability to power on.

Fix: If it powers on, reinstall each piece of hardware one at a time and test after each installation. That will help you figure out exactly which hardware is causing the issue and if there is any related to the hardware components.

9. Connect an External Monitor

First, connect the external monitor to the PC. If the display does not show up, press F4. If the display shows up on the external monitor instead of the main display, then there might be a graphics driver conflict.

Fix: Install graphics driver properly.

Conclusion

If your computer screen goes black all of a sudden, the last thing you should do is panic. This can be a normal issue and you should deal with it calmly. Although the fixes are not easy to implement, you should have a clear idea by now of what could go wrong and what you need to do.
